Products We Love for Wash Day!

So you have to wash your own hair because you can’t get to the salon, and you have no clue where to start. Here are some consumer retail products to create your own wash day starter package and ensure a healthy scalp and quenched hair.

PRE-WASH TREATMENT

We love our own Salvaged Roots Loc Bomb Detox Cleanse. It’s a pH balanced detox bath created for locs that helps remove trapped in dirt and build up from locs and impart shine to the scalp and hair. This treatment is recommended once every 3-4 months depending on the amount of build up in your hair.

SHAMPOO

It’s good to have at least 2 shampoos on deck for your hair: a cleansing shampoo and a moisturizing shampoo. We love Eden Body Works Tea Tree and Peppermint Shampoo to stimulate and invigorate the scalp. Tea Tree and Peppermint are great for dandruff and dry scalp. We also love Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Shampoo. It has great slip for curly naturals and doesn’t leave any buildup on locs.

CONDITIONER

It’s important to condition your hair every time you shampoo, as you have to replace any moisture and nutrients you may have lost cleansing your hair. A deep conditioner or hair masque is ideal at least once per week. We love Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen and Restore Treatment Masque.

LEAVE IN CONDITIONER

Another good product to have on deck is a really good leave in conditioner. Look for a leave-in that feels moisturizing but doesn’t leave build up or a residue, especially on loc’d hair. Curly naturals should look for something that is detangling and super moisturizing so a cream may be a good option. We love It’s a 10 Miracle Leave In Conditioner Spray.

HAIR AND SCALP OIL

Finding the proper oil for your scalp is extremely important as different oils are good for different reasons. A stimulating oil is great for a tight, dry, itchy, or flaky scalp or just to stimulate the follicles for growth. An everyday oil is perfect for nourishing the follicles and as a sealant for the hair strands. We recommend oiling your scalp 2-3 times per week depending on the condition of your scalp. Two products we love are the Salvaged Roots Hair and Beauty, Inc. Revive Oil and Crown Oil.

LOC AND TWIST GEL

Last but not least, our fave gel for loc maintenance AND curl maintenance is the classic ORS Lock and Twist Gel. We love twisting most hair textures with this gel, but make sure not to use too much (as with any product) so you don’t create build up.
